To ensure that Ignite by Hatch™ supports children's learning goals at all grade levels, children's starting skill level is based on their grade level.
This decision is based on a psychometric analysis of Ignite. It will allow children to reach grade-level readiness when they use Ignite to fidelity (30 minutes of play per week, per child). To learn more about this decision please see: Personalized Learning Updates to Ignite by Hatch™.
Grade Level | Starting Skill Level |
Preschool (3yrs) | Skill Level 1 |
PreK (4yrs) Mixed Age Preschool Other |
Skill Level 3 |
Kindergarten (5yrs) | Skill Level 4 |
First Grade (6yrs) | Skill Level 6 |
As always, we will ensure that all children are supported if they struggle in any skill with Guided Practice experiences that now cover all domains and subdomains.
Adding Child Grade Level During Rostering
For all rostering methods in Hatch Insights, we automatically assign a grade based on the birth date given. This grade can be changed at any time, but we recommend ensuring the grade is correct before children start playing Ignite.
Note for Clever and Classlink customers: Grade levels must come from Clever or Classlink and cannot be changed in Insights at this time.
For example, if you add a child via our form in Hatch Insights™, you will find the Grade Level drop-down, as pictured below.
If you add a child in Ignite, you can also set the grade level, as shown here.
These are not your only options for adding children to Hatch with a grade level. To learn more about rostering your children, check out the following articles:

Editing Child Grade Level After Rostering
You can also edit a child's grade level anytime in Ignite and Insights.
If you move a child up, their previously passed games in will still show up, as demonstrated on the child's Skill Detail Report.
You can also move a child down by changing their grade level. If you move a child back, the games with skills they did not demonstrate will not be given until they reach that level again.
In Insights, you can change the grade on a child's profile, as shown below.
You can also change the grade level in Ignite by editing a child's info from the Teacher Area.
